60 years since "Hiroshima"

On August 7 I was wathcing a TV program.

It gave me increadible impression in my mind, deeply. The reason is that it described how so-called the "Hiroshima happened during the World War II. How many of you watched it? and how many of you and other Japanese are familiar with the "Hiroshima"?

It is said that not many Japanese can answer the question, "what happened in August 6, 1945?" Did we forget the terrible way of terminating War? and did we forget that the the threatening of nuclear bomb is expanding in the world? and did we forget that numerous wars or conflicts which never disappear even after the War? Even though it is not a incident that happened to young generation, this is extreamly important to remember as Japanese.

That is why students usually go to Hiroshima or Nagasaki memorail museum as excursion in order to learn what exacty happened 60 years ago. Yes, this is quite important because there are many things that students can feel by their 5 sense throught the buildings left, real voice from suviors or forth. I once went to join the international volunteer work at former concentration camp, and felt great depression and sadness in Germany. Yes, I exactly remember how I felt in front of the crematorium, which made me notice the importance of leaning history.

At least I don't forget the date, however, I'm not sure if I can explain it exactly to others by my word. Now the understanding the historical incidents are not well-known among Japanese, especially in the young age like me. Why? I don't know, but I can assume that the young or many children have less likely to learn or listen to experiences of "Hiroshima"from survivors or grand-parents as time passed. Also we forget what we learned soon in the school even if we did from elementary school to high school. Here is the Japanese education issue; we don't usually explain someting by our own words during the test; what we do for the test or examination is to remember the date or someone's name and write them down.

It is quite important for Japan, only a country that nuclear bomb was dropped on, to adress the importance of maintain peace without any nuclear weapons. One of the reasons is people are not well-famliar with Hisroshima and Nagasaki because of educaiton. For example, American textbooks on the world history doesn't tell students correct information about Hirishima or Nagasaki (ex. the correct number of casualties for exposure of radiation). They don't know how the radiation badly affects body, and how they were suffered from the radiation. Therfore, suvivors are afraid of much expanding the use of them than before or even now, expanding wrong recognition about atomic bombs. Actually, NPT conference haven't showed the positive progress for a long time. To make the matter worse, USA withdrew the NPT and tries to develop their techniques for the atomic bomb. Do we allow USA, which dropped atomic bomb, to behave with selfishness?

I would like to visit Hiroshima memorial museum again this summer before leavng Japan.

What can we do now?

  • Shunya, Im Oscar, your good peruvian friend!!!!. I just wanted you to know that I'm quite impressed for your article. I was in Peru when the 60th annirversary took place in Hiroshima. It was a big news in my country because we have a best concept of Japanese people. I also watched a documentary about Hiroshima, and I was in shocked for the davastation that Hiroshima suffered. But it wasn't also the suffering, its how the japanese people overcome the struggle of the war. Now Hiroshima is a cosmopolitan a beatiful city. Congratulations and keep doing what you are doing. Please email me and remember that you have a peruvian friend rooting for you.
